Look no further than South Africa for general sporting activities and the country’s dominance in many such activities is proof that it is indeed a sports crazy nation.
The country hosts the historic 2010 World Soccer Cup – first in Africa, it hosted and won the 1995 Rugby World Cup, hosted and became finalists in the 1999 cricket World Cup and is a recognized contender in world marathon. There is a general sport for everyone here.
South African soccer has survived decades of international denial and disadvantages and has progressed to a point where it is recognized as the country’s number one national sport. It commands the highest number of players (almost two million), multitudes of supporters who pack our stadiums every week and the highest number of television audiences.
When our national rugby team, popularly known as The SpringBoks rang rings around New Zealand to lift the Webb Ellis Cup in 1995 every South African even those in the remotest rural corners of the country stood up and hugged each other in celebration of the country’s first major sporting achievement – And achievements don’t often come better than a World Cup victory.
For many years cricket, introduced to the country by the British, was regarded as the game of the privileged white man, but great strides have been made to make it a game for all South Africans.
